SIGGRAPH day two: POSTER SESSIONS

There is an amazing amount of research happening in the fields of VR, graphics, adaptive gaming, robotic arms and more. The poster sessions allowed viewers to meet with researchers literally from around the world and discuss there plan of action, for some, to change the world.

Below I share two of my favorite Posters with links to their research.

Keio University Graduate School of Media Design for their work in a "synesthesia suit".

"The Synesthesia Suit provides immersive embodied experience in Virtual Reality environment with vibro-tactile sensations on the entire body". I got to see this same idea demonstrated by many companies including Playstation VR.  link to case study - click here . The synesthesia suit will change the world with its ability to feel in the VR space. There are many applications it can have. Military training is at the top of that list. If a soldier can take a bullet, in a video game in a random location on the body,  there can begin training on what to do in the event that happens. Imagine playing your favorite game and high-fiving your favorite character! This technology is 5 years out from seriously being in the market. However from their case study done at Playstation Experience 2015 people felt like they were in another world when they finished the game. Here is an excerpt from the Caste study to better explain.

"The Experience of Synesthesia Suit consists of two parts. One is synesthesia between music and full-body haptics. Tones of the musical instrument from BGM are mapped on each part of the body and the user feels as if the sounds run through the body. The other one is embodied interaction with the VR environment, there are various type of items with different haptic sensation. The user can touch or bump onto various objects by actively using its entire body. According to the user experiment in PlayStation Experience 2015, we confirmed that the user could feel as if they dived into the virtual world and enclosed by variety of texture of the sounds, and then they felt that they came back from the another world when they finished the suit experience. So, this is, they said, an unknown experience beyond words"

Multimodal Augmentation of surfaces using conductive 3d printing

This research caught my eye when I noticed the application to blind people. This new way of reading books will allow the blind to feel and hear and then actualize shapes in their head, allowing them to make the story more real and easier to follow.

Watch this 48 second video on the Technology

This is being researched by a team in Brazil. Their aim is to change the world. I engaged the gentleman, there were two of them at the poster, and asked what inspires them to do such a service. One gentleman said passion, the other mentioned a more personal story. The man was moved by unfortunate events that he has seen happen in his life and he has created other world changing objects because of it. Seemingly his passion is adaptive technology for those with disabilities. He is working on robotic body parts to assist those born missing a limb. A link to the above piece is available here.

SIGGRAPH Render the possibilities- DAY ONE

Day One -

SIGGRAPH is amazing! There were so many different Technologies being shown. Where I was before I came and where I am now in regards to VR are light years away. its amazing what exposure does for your perception. I ran into people developing with Microsoft Hololens, Samsung and Google. The caliber of people was second to none. Everyone in any given room was a VR developer in some way. I met people from China, UK, Brazil, and even Texas! There is much that can be said but the best way is for me to show you. Here are some of my favorites....
