The end of the "classroom"

Whether you are a College student, High School Student or a teacher of any discipline, chances are in most of your classrooms or meeting rooms you have or almost have fallen asleep.

Extensive research by Herman Millan shows that students no longer want to be lectured to. They would rather be a part of an interactive experience. Opposed to a room for a lecture what about

Research shows impressive increase in student engagement, grades, relationship with the professor, etc. 

What is the learning studio?

The learning studio is a deviation from the standard classroom setting. It is synonymous with an artist studio and the medium the artist would use to effectively engage with the piece. The same idea is true for the Learning Studio. A space that is responsive to the learning activity.

How is it relevant today?

As a millennial myself, I am confident that there is a better way to teach us concepts and theories. We wan to chat with other people are age and figure things out for ourselves. Growing up with interactive technology has given us a feeling of empowerment. We want to make things our own. This includes the classroom experience.

Are any schools using it right now?

What impact has it had on the students in such a learning environment?

• 16% more likely to feel comfortable asking questions

• 28% more likely to be able to conduct group work

• 20% more likely to feel the classroom presents the appropriate image for the college

• 22% more likely to feel valued

The results from faculty were even more supportive. Faculty members are:

• 32% more likely to agree that collaboration between students is better

• 24% more likely to agree that collaboration between faculty and student is better

• 44% more likely to believe the Learning Studio conveys the appropriate image

• 47% more likely to feel valued 

Comments from Students -

“We would probably have fewer dropouts in the Learning Studio. There is more action and entertainment in this room. You don’t feel bored. It stimulates the mind. In the traditional classroom, you look at the clock constantly, and you are eager for the class to be over.”

Comments From Faculty -

“a 15 percent higher quality of papers coming out of this class than in my other course located in the traditional classroom.” She went on to explain that she is “doing less correcting than I ever had to do. The students help each other with their writing, do peer reviews much better, and pull their creative talents together.” 

The Learning Studio is the future of the classroom environment. For the sake of the education of millennials I hope to see this style tested and implemented in more higher education institutions.

The Future CIO

The CIO of the future is definitely a service oriented Leader. 

In an interview with CIO Kevin Griffin at GE Capitol international last month, a discussion was raised about the Future CIO.

 Kevin stated these items to be the most important for the CIO of the Future.

1.  Be a leader of leaders
2. Carry great influencing skills
3. Create innovation labs
4. Lead with the ability to maintain humility in areas that they are not well versed.

Another interesting item raised in the article was that 1 in 5 CIO's of fortune 500 companies feel that they can confidently move to a service driven IT department.

"The future is going to happen to you or it’s going to happen because of you."

Brian Solis wrote an interesting article hitting on the future of businesses and technology. 

MANY HAVE LET THE FUTURE HAPPEN TO THEM

Companies like Uber have it all figured out. One persons strike of genius could very well be the next big thing. Then some could come up with something the next day and then the 

world is on to the next thing. With Ubers success you see a market being filled, that is somewhat a niche, that in the past Taxies have dominated. 

305 million startups occur every year!

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Groceries being delivered. A service that allowed us to go through a mobile app and make a list and pay for the groceries and pay the delivery guy. you would be able to make quick lists and save them in the app. one day we may see the end of the need for mass amounts of store clerks because people will order their groceries and have a middle man go and grab them.

THE GOOD NEWS

The future can happen because of you.

As of 2011 14 million Americans were self employed. 

Imagine if we had 14 million innovative 20 somethings.
we would see so many things change:
